So. I carried a watermelon. To the compost pile, to be precise. Unfortunately, it exploded all over me when I was halfway there. Such are the dangers of overripe melons.
And boy, did we have melons! In the last week, we've gotten seven or eight - a combination of butterscotch melon, French orange melon, and the ill-fated yellow watermelon. We took a few to Iowa for a Schwarzkopf gathering and have been eating others as dessert. The rest will be fertilizing the garden next year. We've also been enjoying sweet corn season. There's nothing quite as summery as a dinner of a burger fresh off the grill and a couple of ears of sweet corn.
I did a little better at using the vegetables these past two weeks than I'd been doing. I'm not quite back up to the vegetable efficiency of the first few weeks of this summer, though. This week I dug into my copies of Everyday Food - book and magazine - and came up with a few new recipes. I'm continually surprised by what a good publication that is. Everything I've tried from it has been simple, fairly easy, and tasty. We tried Green Beans with Potatoes and Pesto, which came together surprisingly well. Another winner was Shells with Grilled Chicken and Mozzarella, which also included fresh tomatoes and could be a great repository for all manner of roasted or sauteed vegetables. Future plans for this week include a chicken stir fry with edamame and a big batch of fresh tomato sauce.
In the interest of full disclosure, here are the contents of the last two weeks of CSA boxes. Some of this I've used in boring applications (how much can I really say about onions or salad?), some of it (well, zucchini) has been given away, and the rest has gone bad.
